Many students we meet ask us why they should do an
internship, especially abroad and we thought that it could be a great
blog post in order to encourage you students to do one abroad, to gain a deeper insight of your future career.
We asked our HR Manager, with years of global work experiences in Multinational Companies around the world, to give us 3 reasons why a student should do an internship abroad. See her answers below.
1. Internships Is A Link Between What You Learned At School And Professional Employment.
Believe it or not but an internship is a bridge between your
studies at college and a professional employment. It is recommended that
students do at least one internship in a field that they are interested
in. This will provide the student a chance of a period of time to “try”
the industry, before actually starting to work as a full time employee.
How would you otherwise be so sure in what you want to work with in the rest of your life?
Moreover, doing an internship abroad is not the same as doing an
internship in your home country. By exposing yourself to a completely
different environment where you will need to take care of yourself, face
challenges, make new friends and establish yourself a new lifestyle is
when you grow as an individual and develop your global skills for your
future career.
2. Gaining Exposure To A Career Field Increases Chances To Get Hired
When employers are recruiting from colleges they are looking for graduates with “10 years of work experience.“
OK, that might not be completely true. However, they want students with
experiences, especially in the field you major in. Employers are well
aware that students and recent graduates who never had any exposure to
the industry, may need time to adapt and also think that it wasn’t
exactly what they expected and eventually quit their jobs after months
of training.
Everybody knows that training cost in terms of money and time.
Therefore, do employers try to avoid recent graduates without any
previous experiences. There are already thousands of examples of
students trying to get hired after graduation without any experiences,
and claiming that you studied abroad is so common now that it’s no
longer a competitive advantage. Why? Because so many students and recent
graduates today, have actually already studied abroad.
However, working abroad is definitely a competitive edge since not so many have experienced it and that’s why we encourage you students to do an internship abroad.
We have seen so many of our previous Absolute students getting hired
after their completion of their internships and that makes us happy.
Then, we know that we have succeeded by placing them in a right
environment.
3. Internships Abroad Is The Key For the Future
Due to the rapid growth of today’s job market it’s becoming even more
essential to stay competitive on the market. We are seeing more and more
Business Schools in France and the Netherlands changing their policies
towards internships. Now students have to, do at least an internship abroad for 5-6 months, in order to get their Bachelor Diploma.
Look at any student resume from the business schools in France and you will find work experiences abroad, guaranteed.
Therefore, it’s important to stay competitive, be unique and do 1-2 internships abroad yourself.
Have you done an internship abroad yet?
Please tell us how it was and what you learned!
